If there’s one thing we learnt from Sex and The City it’s that you can never have too many shoes (and it’s totally justifiable to get in debt to build your collection.) It was a show that taught us many things.
Unfortunately though, in real life, sometimes that collection can’t really extend to jump on every trend that the shoe world has to offer. Unless you’re a Kardashian and you have the wardrobe space – then go for gold!
For the rest of us though, it pays to invest in staple styles that will work with outfits for years to come. Plus shoes are the best investments because feet are the one part of our body that doesn’t change in size (until you’re pregnant, but that’s a whole other story).
Anyway, to make your wardrobe planning a little easier today we thought we’d zero in on the shoes that every lady should own. Owning a pair of each of these (staple colours work best) is really a fool-proof footwear plan for those occasions when you really need to pull together an outfit – quick.
Trust us, it'll always pay off to have a pair of shoes on hand you need!
A basic pair of flats is a no-brainer. They’re a must have for your wardrobe and a must-have to life. We recommend one with a thicker sole and small heel as you’ll probably get more wear out of it. Plus it’s a style that’s equal parts ladylike/casual. It’s also better for your feet to have support, especially if you’re on them all day – or shopping up a storm!

Sometimes the shoes make the outfit which is why it’s handy to have a pair of kicka$$ statement heels on hand. Whether you opt for a pair in a bright colour, pattern or both they’re sure to bring any dull or all black outfit to life when you need it the most!
Try: 85 Leopard Print Calf Hair Pumps, Gianvito Rossi - $1462.00
Casual gym shoes/sneakers
We know that gym shoes are meant for the gym, but when you’re running around doing errands on the weekend or meeting your girlfriends for coffee it pays to invest in a pair that not only work with your active wear but that you keep non-dirty so that they work just as well with a pair of jeans too. Try something super sporty or invest in something more laid back. Both styles will work, just choose something that's suited to you.
Try: 2750 Cotu Classic, Superga - $89.95
Go with everything ankle boots
Come winter a cute pair of ankle boots are a must. All you need to look for is a walkable heel a neutral/ black hue and you’ll be set.
Try: Patsha Suede Ankle Boot, Isabel Marant - $710
A pointy stiletto
A pointy stiletto will never let you down, plus they’ll always be in style. They’re perfect for the office, nights out and everything else in between. They’re the classic way to complete an outfit.
Try: Black Leather Pumps, Christian Louboutin - $898.34
We know that Havaianas are often people’s go-to shoes during the summer, but really we all need a nicer pair of flats for those warm nights too. Comfort is key when choosing a pair of sandals but owning a pair with small distinct details, or in a fun colour can really up the ante so invest wisely.
Try: Triple Strap Flat Sandal, Mode Collective - $150.00
A pair of nude heels
A pair of nude heels, like stilettos, are a no-brainer. They’ll also go with anything and everything. Wear them during the day, don them for evening and anytime all year round. Owning a pair of these should really be a non-negotiable.
