Us ladies have some weird habits. Eating too much chocolate, stealing other people’s chips while never ordering any of our own and of course buying a whole heap of clothes that we’ll never actually wear.
And that’s just a small snapshot of some our randomness.
On a serious note though, the whole buying clothes and either wearing them once, twice or (OMG) maybe even never at all, is really a bad habit that needs to stop. It’s a crappy way to spend our money and will only make our wardrobes feel like a big, fat mess. Yes, this even includes all of the stuff we buy that’s on sale. Because you know what? It’s not really a great deal if we never wear it.
So how can we end this insanity? Well, with a little planning and some much needed self-control it can totally be done. Let’s chat a little more about it below.
Buy clothes for your life RIGHT NOW
So you’ve just seen a killer winter coat although you live in the tropics. But you buy it anyway – just in case you travel somewhere cold someday. Good investment? Not really. A lot of factors come into play when you shop for clothes. Your climate? Your size? (Pregnancy is a big one!) And even lifestyle. Buy clothes for your reality and not your make believe fantasy land/wardrobe in your head.
Ask if you can return it
You know how you walk into a store and the sales assistants are decked out head to toe in amazing clothes looking fab? Well, then you’ll also know how seeing them can instantly inspire you to buy their entire ensemble and all their accessories too. Which is why returns are everything in this scenario. Because after you come down from the adrenalin shopping high you get whilst shopping in store, you’ll also need to know that you’ll be able to return stuff too (just in case you look in the mirror and realise that you’re not the 21 year old sales assistant and none of the stuff you bought actually looks any good…it’s ok, we’ve all been there.)
Don’t buy clothes for ‘when you'll lose weight’
So many women buy clothes they’d like to wear 'when they'll lose weight’. Although to be honest, buying a size smaller is a bit of delusional plan. Plus that piece of clothing will forever hang in your closet waiting to be worn until you reach your goal weight – and how long will that take? Styles and trends change so quickly these days that we bet you'll be onto something new by then.
Label junkies are a no,no
Are you buying something because of the brand name? Label junkies are a big no, no. A brand will not make something look amazing on your body, or in your wardrobe.
Are you buying high maintenance clothes?
This is a big one! Dry cleaning takes time and if you’re the type of gal who can barely be bothered to do the washing should you really then invest in high maintenance clothes that need a whole heap of TLC? Plus, after you wear these clothes once, how long will it take you to getting around to wearing them again? Dry cleaning can be expensive (and annoying) which is why it's important to think before you buy.
Ask yourself, ‘does this feel like me?’
At the end of the day your clothes have to be you. You have to love wearing them and actually want to reach for them in the mornings instead of sadly skipping past items you purchased on a whim. You know your day to day uniform and weekend wear so before you buy anything ask yourself ‘do I love this…like REALLY, love this not just half assed love this?’ If it feels wrong, it’ll look wrong too.
Buuuut if you can’t stop thinking about it we say...BUY IT. BUY IT. BUY IT.
Tell us, how often do you buy clothes you'll never wear? C'mooon be honest!
