Five Ways To Stay Motivated To Exercise This Winter

Welcome back friends! Cat here.

As the weather starts to cool, I am going to put my hand up and say my exercise game has not been the strongest. However, without getting into my one million excuses why, let’s chat about staying motivated throughout winter.

  1. Keep trying new things

This is where most people set themselves up for failure. You don’t have to work yourself into the ground for hours on end! Listen to your body. TRY, TRY, TRY new things! With friends, on the weekends, with work colleagues, family! At work, the PK and RM girls try and get together every other week and do a walk around the lake, just to chat! (I mean sometimes we do it over wine, too!) But we aim for walks!

I find that I work better in “group” activities, this stems from years of dancing. It’s more motivating and fun for me. Plus, you’re surrounded by like-minded people who are there, not to judge but support you! Vice versa!

Apart from the gym, I like to go for runs with my dogs (2 birds, 1 stone) Join the occasional yoga class at SOULution (Above Rebel Muse) and before all of that I did pilates with my Mum for a while. Because not every day is the same, it’s good to have options!

  1. Gym buddies are magical!

When I started training at Eighty8, my mind was literally blown. Like, how have I not tried this before! I am not one to walk myself into the gym and kick my own ass. My boyfriend’s sister Ainsley joined the gym around the same time and you would not believe what having a familiar face does for your motivation, because you are not alone! You can carpool and catch up then after your workout, get breakfast! It’s a win-win! Plus, you meet other people! More gym buddies. See where I’m going with this?!

  1. Treat yo’ self

This isn’t something to do every week! However, when I am really not feeling it. I will treat myself to some new sneakers or leggings or sports bra as I am one of those people who gets excited to wear new things straight away!

Maybe you’re more tech savvy?! Try a Fitbit or an apple watch? Keep track of your body that way!

  1. Do it to feel good, not just look good

I could sit here and tell you a million reason why exercise is important. I like to think of it as an hour of reward, time to give back to yourself! Think about how good you feel after finishing your workout, think about how much clearer your thoughts are, how productive you’re being or how great your butt looks in those jeans because you’ve been squatting like a pro! Seriously, someone once told me they loved exercising because they loved how great they felt walking around in their underwear!

Whatever it is, always keep that in the back of your mind.

  1. Eat amazing foods!

As you find a rhythm with your exercise, you’ll find you start getting stronger and more eager to continue. It’s SUPER important to help your body rest and repair itself afterwards. Make sure you are eating nourishing foods to feed your muscles and help your metabolism keep moving. Also, make sure you are eating ENOUGH. Because your appetite will increase after exercise. Especially if you do it first thing in the morning – you’ll need lots of snacks throughout the day. (See, another win-win!)
