It’s that annoying time of the year again. You know the one that’s all like ‘new year, new you!’ time to get skinny, detox, lose weight, forget about the past, turn into a different person, not eat a second serving of pavlova etc… (I will literally scratch my eyes out if you say this to me - espesh. the pavlova part.)
But it’s everywhere, right?
And realistically, I think I couldn’t finish off a year on the Rebel Muse blog without being all like ‘let’s get motivated in 2017’ because motivation is something I feel deep in my soul. OR some days ‘not in my soul’. If you feel me? HA.
You see there are a gazillion and one things I’m NOT motivated for. Some days I wake up and think ‘FML I would rather die than go through my emails.’ Or ‘seriously, all I want to do is sit on the couch and watch GIRLS than go for a run.’
But the crazy thing is…I still do all of the things I don’t want to do. And even though some days I have no idea how they get done AND I complain about them more than is acceptably annoying – they just magically get ticked off my to do list.
Because I do them.
You see, motivation is part of life. Especially if you work for yourself like I do (or babe #boss Alicia with RM and PK), BUT it is also part of everyday mundane routines like taking off your makeup at night or not eating half a packet of Tim Tams when nobody’s home (which I bet we can all agree requires a ton of motivation too).
Because in life, there are a whole bunch of things you need to get motivated for. And realistically there are a lot of things we need to get motivated for that we hate. Which is why learning to self-motivate is a valuable skill.
Plus, I think we can all agree 2016 was a little bit ‘meh’ so with a bright and shiny new year ahead of us, if there’s ever a time to get motivated it’s now. (But not in a new year, new you type of bullshiz way. In a real, honest ‘hey we need to get stuff done this year and not be mega sloths,’ type of way.)
Plus, if you have big plans for 2017, then this post is totally for you.
Maybe you’ve been thinking about changing jobs, you want to start a side hustle gig, or maybe you really just want to learn to self-motivate in order take your makeup off at night (because you really need to learn that skill, yo!)
Anyway, this is something we all need to do. Because motivation is something we have to work hard at and something that doesn’t just VOILA pop out at us from nowhere. Some days we got it goin’ on and some days we don’t, (but really, all this means is that you need to put in a little extra effort on those days when your motivation seems to have gone MIA.)
Which is why below I’m sharing with you my utmost favourite tips to help you get sh!t done (even on those days when you'd prefer to sloth your life away on the couch instead).
Ps. there are only three tips so keep reading... #youcandooooit.
Write a shiz ton of lists and prioristise (even if you use a scrap piece of paper that your baby smooshes banana all over)
This is my numero uno essential because without writing lists nothing ever gets done. The days I don’t write lists I am lost, my attempt at balancing work/ life feels chaotic and anxiety fills the air. I also drop balls, forget things and yell at my husband for saying hello. I need my lists; and even if it’s written on a scrap piece of paper my baby has smooshed banana all over, I CAN still glance at it and figure out the most important things I need to do ASAP. (Or honestly, just do the most important thing and call it a day.)
Work when your brain works
I feel like we all have a time of day when we feel the most motivated (i.e when your brain works the most). Mine is first thing in the morning. You know that meme 'first I drink the coffee, then I do the things,' - that is me. Come evening, the coffee stops flowing and my brain clocks out. Your most motivating time of day might be in the morning too, or it might be late at night. Watevs. Find what works for you, but use your time wisely/efficiently – that is key. Don't waste it playing on Instagram... stalking your cousins random friend.
Don't get stuck like a hamster spinning in a wheel
Now, I think this tip is very ‘business-ey’, BUT it can also work if you have fitness, house, family life goals too. Nobody wants to get stuck like a hamster spinning in a wheel. Yaaaawn. Think of your life five years from now, ten years for now. What does it look like? How will you get there? Are you stuck like a hamster spinning in a wheel? (LOL). Nothing worth having comes easy and it’ll pay to put in a little extra effort to reap the rewards. If anything, just remember ‘ a comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there.’ Or at least think of all the extra clothes your hard work will enable you to hang in your wardrobe.
PS. I'd love to know what you have planned for 2017. Any big goals? Things you've got your heart set on? Or do you really need to learn the fine art of motivation for taking your makeup off at night? Spill the deets! Let's chat and share below!
