The fashion world is changing. Ralph Lauren, who is 76, told Vogue this week that “showing clothes, then delivering them six months later … it’s over”. “Our girl lives on the internet.”
And we say Amen to that.
Actually, maybe not that we are living on the internet parse, but the immediacy and the ability to shop our favourite looks, style trends and make them our own – social’s got this. Seriously when Burberry announced they were making their Spring/Summer collection available immediately they started something, and now the fashion world is catching on.
Anyway, New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 17 this year was anything but boring so let’s chat about the best bits – stat.
The Shows Worth Stalking
Brandon Maxwell (best friend and stylist to Lady Gaga) who only started his label a little while ago was the ticket you needed to have. With Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn and Gaga sitting front row the show was a giant homage to the noughties and models danced down the runway to Shania Twain’s ‘Man I feel like a woman!’ to prove it. It was a fashion moment that somehow slipped perfectly into fashion right now. The show was energizing, the clothes were energizing and the entire vibe was everything a fashion pack needed to wake up and pay attention to.
The Alexander Wang show basically said 'we can continue to live in sport luxe and somehow keep trackies on trend,' when his collection ended in a surprise mini collection designed in collaboration with Adidas. After the show the Adidas x Alexander Wang collection was then driven around Manhattan and sold until it was all gone. It was like a fashion Cinderella story! (kinda)... that made money. Ps. at the after party McDonalds was the caterer of choice. We feel like this needs to be mentioned, although we’re not so sure how we feel about it. It is however very #laidbackchic.
Jonathan Saunders who pulled his label a little while ago is now the Creative Director at Diane Von Furstenburg (DVF) and he bought it back. Showing off the new collection in a quiet airy, Zen like place these clothes were everything. High waisted trousers, blouses that were all about the frills. You could not escape the prints in this collection, so if prints are your thing. Stalk them. Get inspired. This collection is being labeled as iconic to DVF as her wrap dresses.
The Not So Great
Yeezy Season 4 was a big fat mess. Instead of being a show that earned Kanye super kudos as his runway largely consisted black models, it instead turned into a show that was one giant elaborate boring ‘waiting for Kardashian’ spectacle. Plus it was slammed by everyone near and far as most of the models were forced to stand on the runway for hours in record heat. Some eventually collapsed while others were helped by audience members. Ummmm was this art? No.
Marc Jacobs blurred the lines between artistic expression and political correctness when he sent models with pastel rainbow dreadlocks down the runway. It was fun, a little crazy but the internet blew up as soon as they saw them. What do you guys think?
What You’ll Be Wearing Next Season
The best thing about NYFW SS 17 for Aussies is that while it’s getting into winter on the other side of the world, here warmer weather is around the corner. So realistically, we can all jump on the next season trends now. So get your wallets ready to buy:
Cropped jeans straight and cut right above the ankle. Bonus points if they’re frayed. Flat mules, to wear with everything (especially with your frayed cropped jeans), baggy shirts – think IDGAF boyfriend style, mid length skirts and dresses – in softer more feminine shapes, logo tees and paisley scarfs – tied around your neck of course, as well as silk dresses/tops and slip dresses/lingerie dressing (which we’ve banged on about before HERE!) Seriously ladies, it’s time to gets sexy. Off the shoulder is also still a big trend – but beware, since this trend is so easy to pull off/wear everyone will be doing it…so it might take it’s toll. Watch this space.
The Street Style!
Finally, street style is on the up again. There were so many looks to love.
