One of Paulo Coehlo’s best-selling books, it’s got a legion of followers for a reason. The story is about an Andalusian Shephard boy who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian dessert in search of a treasure buried in the pyramids. Along the way he meets a whole bunch of people, including an Alchemist who help him on his journey. Truly evocative, his travels turn more into a journey within and well…it’s inspired a gazillion people for a reason. Read it, you’ll love it.
Why Not Me, Mindy Kaling
This book is as hilarious in writing as Mindy is in real life. Relatable and utterly honest Mindy provides a fun tongue cheek look into her adult life and making it as a female in show biz. From the perils of yo yo dieting, working in jobs she knows she’s not ready for to even providing a sneak peek into being a try-hard in the New York dating scene. This is a major LOL worthy read.
Today will be different, Maria Semple
From the author of ‘Where’d you go Bernadette?’ (which BTW is another must add to your reading list now type of book) comes this book. The story of a glamorous wife, mother, woman on the verge of a breakdown HA. It’s hilarious, witty and comes jam packed with a mega bold observation on life that will make you feel like things could be worse (and maybe you do really have your shiz together.)
One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
If you’re after a true classic, then this is it. Hundred Years of Solitude tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and death of a mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendia family. Its inventive, sad with a truth that will strike your soul. We must warn you though: All the Spanish names are a little hard to get your head around at the beginning, but if you persevere it’ll be worth it!
Burial Rites, Hannah Kent
This is one of those books with a plot that isn’t everyone’s jam. Set in the 1800’s Agnes is condemned for her part in the brutal murder of two men. Based on a true story though, the writing is out of this world and as the days until Agnes’ execution draw closer you’ll be dying to know if she did, or didn’t commit the crime. (Which is funny considering you probably won’t be much into the plot when you first pick up the book. HA.)
Hunger: A memoir of (my) body, Roxanne Gay
World famous feminist author, well known for her first book Bad Feminist has just released another title, bound to be a classic. It’s a brutally honest memoir that recounts how a childhood sexual assault led her to purposely gain weight in order to be unseen and therefore feel safe. It’ll inspire you to be more considerate of the bodies of others…and more accepting of your own.
