Many people find joy in the winter season. Winter is a season that brings joy to many people. It brings holidays, music which expresses celebration and festivity, and a good reason to sit comfortably around the fireplace and enjoy a cup of delicious hot chocolate. As the days become colder, the positive effects of this season are also impacted. As our skin becomes drier, we may experience acne or severe eczema. These occurrences can have a negative impact on one’s self-confidence during the holiday season and make people wonder if they are delighted.
The sudden change in temperature is the main cause of seasonal acne. Teledoc explains the causes of seasonal acne in winter.
- In order to replenish the moisture lost by the skin, the integumentary glands produce more sebum. This would then clog the pores of the skin and cause inflammation, leading to spontaneous breakouts.
- Continuous exposure to hot water can also cause skin dehydration.
Since I was a teenager, I have had to deal with seasonal acne. I would dread winter because I’d have to deal with acne that would appear out of nowhere. It would ruin my holiday spirit. I was afraid to talk with my family or friends at gatherings because I thought they would comment on my skin. My skin was oily, and I had acne. Any pictures of me made me feel insecure. Over the years, I’ve learned a few tips to help me deal with seasonal acne.
- Apply moisturizer consistently every day
Moisturizer was the most important component of my skincare routine, particularly when faced with the cold and dry conditions in winter. It was effective for me to use a consistent amount of moisturizer every day, which I applied evenly on my face. Too much moisturizer can clog pores, give skin an oily appearance, and cause acne.
- Exfoliate your skin
It is beneficial to exfoliate once or twice per week in order to remove a large amount of buildup, including the residue from dead skin and facial products. This will allow your moisturizer to better protect the skin against dryness. I recommend an exfoliation device with batteries and reusable brushes, which has three exfoliation speed settings for a fast, consistent pace. But loofahs or sponges will also work!
- Do not use hot water to wash your face
It is true that in cold weather, it feels good to wash or shower with hot water. This may temporarily relieve your symptoms, but it can also strip the skin of its natural oils, causing irritation, dryness, and breakouts. It is best to use warm or lukewarm water, as it will not irritate the skin.
- Facemasks are a good idea
Face masks can be a great addition to your skincare routine. Face masks come in many different themes, especially during winter. So go wild! Use masks with specific blemish or pore treatment for acne-prone skin.
Although everyone’s skin is different, these tips may help your skin adjust to seasonal changes. Acne does not define a person’s character and is only temporary. I hope this can be a confidence boost for those who experience winter acne.
